The United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR) had a requirement for the development of an online information system, known as PreventionWeb, which had the primary purpose of providing relevant data, information and knowledge to help countries build a culture of resilience to disasters.

UN/ISDR approached Online Solutions to submit a proposal for the branding, homepage concepts and production of selected template compositions from which a beta website would be built and published to garner feedback from the disaster reduction community globally.

The Online Solutions proposal was successful and the production of the brand began. Initially with a detailed creative brief to re-establish the project goals, audience profile, desired perception and tone and the overall communication strategy. Once this was agreed, Online Solutions drew up logo concepts of the PreventionWeb logo which each embraced the brand values established in the creative brief in individual ways to give the PreventionWeb team the opportunity to decide which particular visual direction and values they most like to represent. The designs were then submitted for review by the project team.

The final logo worked on various fronts, a curve was introduced to represent a framed view of a globe and symbolise the global aspects of PreventionWeb. The negative space left by the curve forms sky or an arrow pointing upwards, signifying progression. The two shapes then combine to form a square and provide the logo with an overall sense of solidity.

From the basic the brand design, website visual design concepts were produced from a set of detailed wireframes and designed so that the resultant website could accommodate for a wealth of information from wide-ranging sources whilst also feeling approachable enough to encourage the participation by third parties to add their own content and comments.
